Munster Schools Badminton Finals

This year Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré had two boys’ teams participating in the Munster Finals, which were held on 4th of February 2010.  These consisted of the Boys U19 team, and the Boys U14 team.

On Thursday morning the 4th February the teams organised themselves in the school for the journey to the University of Limerick.  It was a cold morning but spirits were very high.  On reaching the University the sight of the arena was surreal, as some players didn’t think that they could have made it this far at the beginning of the year.

On arrival, both teams went on to play very quickly. After each game there was another around the corner, with each one as challenging as the other. When the games drew to a close, one of the teams came back with some silverware and they were the boys Under 14 who came runners-up to a very strong Waterford team.  For the Under 19 team it was disappointment as they came a close third with a good few of the games ending 30-29 so they were very unlucky.  Overall everyone enjoyed the day and are looking forward to many more successful Badminton matches in the future. The teams would like to extend their thanks to Mr. Hogan for his hard work and guidance throughout the season.

Coláiste Phobal Senior B Camogie Champions
On Thursday 11th March, the Senior team travelled to Templederry GAA field to contest the Co. Tipperary Senior B Blitz.  Ideal weather and pitch conditions ensured that we were going to see some fine displays of Camogie.

Round 1 saw us take on old rivals Templemore in a tightly fought contest. Both sides were evenly matched but the scoring power of Máiréad Teehan saw Coláiste Phobal put their name on the score-board.  Sandra Dwyer from Our Lady’s Secondary School responded with some excellent free-taking.  This match really came down to the wire but scores from Sinéad Moloney and Máiréad Teehan saw Roscrea take the result.

Coláiste Phobal Roscrea 0.5          Our Lady’s Templemore 0.2

Round 2 meant we took on Nenagh Vocational School in what was a physical battle.  Coláiste Phobal opened the scored on a goal spree – some fine shots taken by Edwina King, Máiréad Teehan and Sinéad Moloney. Rachel Loughnane and Christine cleary also added points to this result.

Coláiste Phobal Roscrea 5.2           Nenagh V.S. 1.0
Round 3 Coláiste Phobal took on a strong Cahir team.  Under the guidance of Mr. Keith Morrissey, this team are growing from strength to strength.
Our girls knew, however, a place in the Final was at stake.  Super work from Louise Larkin in defence and some excellent score taking from our very impressive forward line of Emer Reynolds, Kelly Sammon, Máiréad Teehan and Edwina King saw us coast through to the Final.

Coláiste Phobal Roscrea 4.2              Cahir 0.0
Round 4 The final of this competition saw Coláiste Phobal Roscrea taking on Our Lady’s, Templemore in what we knew would be a battle of willpower and which team could overcome tiredness.  Both teams were drained after already competing in three games.  It was expected to be a very close game.
Máiréad Teehan (Roscrea) and Sandra Dwyer (Templemore) opened the scoring with a point each and those of us on the side-line feared this match could go to extra time. At the Interval, Roscrea re-grouped and some inspirational words of encouragement from our Team Captain, Louise Larkin saw them dig deep in the second half. Roscrea were very impressive. Kerry McLeish kept Our Lady’s star player, Sandra Dwyer under control. Louise Larkin, Kate Aherne and Clodagh Shanahan remained solid in defence.  The McLeish sisters worked tirelessly at centre-field. Máiréad Teehan, Emer Reynolds, Rachel Loughnane, Kelly Sammon and Edwina King were superb in attack. Roscrea dominated in the last ten minutes and really did save the best until last.  Kelly Sammon, Kate Aherne, Máiréad Teehan and Edwina King added to the score-board and ensured Coláiste Phobal were victorious.

At the final whistle, scenes of jubilation and joy were seen as our Captain Fantastic, Louise Larkin accepted the Shield.

Sincere thanks to Templederry GAA field, our 2 referees and all teams who competed on the day. It must also be noted that it was the last time our 6th Years would contest in the Black and Red Jersey.  To Louise Larkin, Sinéad Moloney, Rachel Loughnane, Kerry McLeish, Leona McLeish and Emer Reynolds, we say a big thank you for the time and effort you have given to Camogie in Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré.  You will be missed but we wish you every success in the future.

Results Excellent at Coláiste Phobal

Following on from the excellent Leaving Cert. results, Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré once again came to the fore with outstanding Junior Cert. results.

Delighted students in Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré after receiving their Junior Certificate results.

College Principal, Gerard O’Brien was delighted and expressed great pride in the students and their teachers for their great achievements.  He pointed out that nearly 10%  of pupils produced seven A’s or more with 40% of all pupils getting seven honours or more.  Mr. O’Brien commended both teachers and pupils for their great efforts in producing such results.  He stated that the results were a wonderful endorsement of the systems in place in a large school like Coláiste Phobal with mixed ability teaching dominating across the curriculum.

Past Pupil wins Prestigious Gold Medal at U.L. Graduation Ceremony

Congratulations to Daniel Mulvihill, Borris-in-Ossory, Co. Laois winner of the Gold Medal at the recently held Graduation Ceremonies in the University of Limerick.

Daniel a past-pupil of Coláiste Phobal (1998-2003) is the son of Danny and Monica Mulvihill and the eldest of two children.  Mary, his sister is currently a 5th Year student in the Coláiste.
As a student in the Coláiste he showed exceptional ability in Maths and the Sciences and was awarded the John Cahill Bursary for his outstanding Physics results in the Leaving Certificate 2003.
Daniel has graduated from U.L. as a Mechanical Engineer with First Class Honours and came top of the graduating class of 2008.  This is indeed an outstanding achievement for Daniel who now goes on to Oxford on scholarship to study for his PhD in Hertford College.
We, in the Coláiste are justly proud of Daniel’s achievements and wish him continued success as he enters the hallowed corridors of Oxford.

Success on the Playing Field

We wish to extend our congratulations to two of our students, Sarah Cleary (6th Year) and Kerry McLeish (5th Year) who were members of the triumphant Offaly Minor Camogie team who beat Waterford in Athy on Sunday 31st August, thus clenching the All-Ireland title in the process.

L.C.A. Retreat to Castletown

On Tuesday 9th September, our Leaving Certificate Applied 5th Year students travelled to the De La Salle Retreat Centre in Castletown, Co. Laois.  The day itself centred on working together as a group and getting to know one another.  The theme of the Retreat was ‘Relationships’.

A sincere thanks to Derek, Marie, Mick and Edel who gave the retreat and really inspired our students.  Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the day out.  A big thank you to Fr. Lorcan Kenny, Ms. O’Gorman and Ms. Larkin who accompanied the students on the day.

Cáirde

On Thursday afternoon, 4th September, the Cáirde group spent two classes with First Years in their Tutor groups.  Through games, chats and poster-making the aim of the afternoon was to ensure that First Years are settling in and bonding as a class.  It proved to be a very enjoyable experience for all involved.

Cáirde have also organised a rota for spending break and lunch time with the First Years and a Céilí is planned for October.

Cáirde is now in it’s eleventh year of existence and we are delighted with the 27 members of Cáirde for 2008/2009.

We wish all our 6th Years every blessing for the year ahead and we hope that all 1st Years have a very enjoyable and successful year.
