The latest edition of the ever-popular Roscrea People is now available. The launch took place on Friday evening last in the Damer Court Hotel. The honour of launching the 37th issue was bestowed upon Mayor Denis Ryan who was also nominated on the night for a “Roscrea People Of The Year Award”.
In his address the Mayor complimented George and Carmel Cunningham on another wonderful publication. This year’s edition is one of 172 pages. ‘It is a Roscrea institution’ stated the Mayor, and ‘Christmas in Roscrea would not be the same without it.’ He was particularly pleased to see the New Leisure Centre feature on the cover in words and a wonderful picture by Brian Redmond. Editor George Cunningham thanked all who helped particularly his wife Carmel, Photographer Pj Wright and advertising manager Amy Brooks. Carmel Cunningham thanked the business and commercial people of Roscrea for their continued support in these difficult times. It was heartening to see that despite the recession a magazine of this size could still be produced.

Speaking on behalf of the Roscrea community Fr Tom Corbett PP gave a hearty welcome to the publication and spoke of how it knits the parish together. ‘It does a power of good and reminds us of the wonderful things happening here in one small town in the heart of Ireland’, he said.
There are many pieces of interest in this year's edition. Apart from the yearly review of most clubs, committees and organisations in the area, this year's edition also features a piece on the “building on the modern Slighe Dhála” as well as an article about the “Sacred Heart Sisters” departing Roscrea. The 2009 magazine also has an extensive review of Fleadh Cheoil Na Mumhan 2009 and a review of the Census Of Ireland 1911 from a Roscrea situation by Eamonn Horan. Eamonn also reviews new work on Daisy Bates in this year’s edition while Liam Doran chose a “Religious Controversy Of 1870” in his yearly contribution. Tomás Lupton takes us on a trip down memory lane and reviews what Roscrea was like the year the Second Word War commenced in 1939. As always the Roscrea People never fails to disappoint and is certainly a must this Christmas for everyone from Roscrea and those scattered across the world with a Roscrea connection.
